  On February 16, 2025, the death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, India, shocked the entire academic community and triggered widespread protests. A bright and ambitious third-year B.Tech student, Prakriti's untimely passing has raised serious questions about harassment, institutional negligence, and the safety of students on campuses across India.

Who Was Prakriti Lamsal? 

 Prakriti Lamsal, 20 years old, was pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at KIIT. A young woman with a promising future ahead, Prakriti’s life took a tragic turn when she was found dead in her hostel room under suspicious circumstances. The initial reports pointed toward a suicide, though this remains under investigation. 

  The Alleged Harassment and Blackmail

Before her death, Prakriti had reportedly been harassed and blackmailed by a fellow student, Advik Srivastava. According to sources, Advik had allegedly obtained compromising photos of Prakriti and had been threatening to release them unless she complied with his demands. This harassment caused significant emotional distress for Prakriti. Despite reaching out for help, the response from the university authorities was reportedly slow, and there were claims of institutional indifference to her concerns. The blackmail and harassment she endured were said to have escalated in the months leading up to her tragic death, but no effective action was taken to stop it.

 The incident sparked protests within the KIIT campus. Students, particularly from Nepal, expressed their outrage over the handling of the situation by the university. They accused KIIT's administration of failing to protect Prakriti and allowing the harassment to go unchecked. The protestors also highlighted how the university seemed to downplay the seriousness of the allegations against Advik Srivastava. In the wake of Prakriti’s death, there were allegations that the university initially ordered all Nepali students to vacate the campus. This decision triggered further unrest, with students fearing that the university was trying to cover up the incident. In response to the protests, the university later retracted the order and allowed the students to return to campus.

In addition to Advik's arrest, five staff members from KIIT were also taken into custody.
